SCULPTOR Eduardo Castrillo will have his first monument in Mindanao. Titled Suppressing the voice of the people, a tribute to the slain members of mass media, it will rise at the De Lara Provincial Capitol Park in Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental. The monument, over five meters tall, is Castrillo’s statement to press freedom. It is a project of Governor Oscar Moreno and the provincial board of Misamis Oriental. For more than four decades, Castrillo has been creating his Historical and Cultural Legacy series of monuments all over the country. Some of these commemorate historical events, while others uphold Filipino values that reflect the valor of the race. Castrillo often donates his artist’s fee and makes the various provinces pay only for cost of materials and labor.
