Hangin sa Metro eiowww

NAPAKADUMI ng kaledad ng hangin sa Metro Manila, higit na malayo sa panuntunang tinakda ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), batay sa isang bagong air quality survey.

Ayon sa Total Suspended Air Particulates (TSP) Air Quality survey, may average na 138 micrograms ng pollutants sa kada normal cubic meter ang kaledad ng hangin sa Kamaynilaan noong 2008, napakataas sa katanggap-tanggap na 90 micrograms per normal cubic meter na tinakda ng DENR.

Tinala sa Edsa ang pinakamaruming hangin na may 282 micrograms. Pangalawa ang Valenzuela City sa 156 micrograms at pangatlo ang lugar ng National Printing Office sa Quezon City sa 144 micrograms.

Kabilang sa mga nagpaparumi ng hangin ang sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), at carbon monoxide (CO).

Noong 2004, nasa 160 micrograms ang avergae, 154 micrograms sa 2005, 142 micrograms sa 2006 at 132 micrograms na sa 2007. Ngunit muli itong tumaas noong 2008.

Ayon kay Jonas Leones, assistant director ng Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), maaaring dumami ang dumi sa hangin dahil sa tumaas na bilang ng mga sasakyan at sa tumatatag na presyo ng petrolyo at pagdami ng lugar ng konstruksyon.

“Storms can clean our air. But the pollution is continuous. Nature has a way to recover but we need to support it by reducing fumes,” ani Leones.

Dagdag pa niya, may sapat na batas sa bansa upang mapangalagaan ang kaledad ng hangin, kabilang ang Clean Air Act. “What we need is the political will to enforce the laws, especially at the local level.”
