One of the most remarkable innovations that the Mutya ng Pilipinas introduced in the country’s pageant scene is the inclusion of overseas-based Filipino candidates.
This step not only recognized the Filipino ancestry of overseas-based women, but also raised the level of competition in the national pageant, thus making the Mutya ng Pilipinas the most exciting thing that ever hit the Philippine beauty arena.
And the 2010 Mutya ng Pilipinas pageant promises to give another thrilling competition with the selection of a formidable batch of candidates representing the Filipino communities in the United States.
Leading the fearless triumvirate is Christi Lynn “Ashley” Landrito McGarry from the East Coast. The 5-foot-11 tall stunner is the valedictorian of her grammar class at the Our Lady of Victories in Jersey City. A prolific writer of prose and poetry, Ashley is also active in sports, being a four-year varsity basketball player in high school.
Ashley bagged the first Miss Teen Philippines-USA title in 2004 and landed second in the Miss Teen New Jersey pageant in 2007. Ashley was also proclaimed one of the prettiest Filipino-Americans for 2007-2008 and placed sixth overall in the 2009 Top Model of the World contest in Germany where she represented the Philippines.
Also posing a serious threat to other aspirants is Dionne Nicole Meehlheib, 19, a model for City Models. She hopes to pursue a career in fashion design someday.
Rounding up the competitive set from the US is April Mendoza whose pageant experience included the prestigious and highly-competitive Maharlikang Pilipino Pageants-USA.
Watch out for more competitive overseas-based contestants in the coming weeks and witness an even more exciting clash as the Mutya ng Pilipinas pageant culminates on Aug. 28 at Resorts World Manila.
